Heavy loss at Libbaton for RND Veterans
Simon Hopkins' (now not so) merry men took a 4-1 beating from their local rivals in the Emerton Court Trophy and now face the toughest of tasks in the home leg on June 17th (tee off 12.30pm).
"It was a disaster," admitted a downcast but defiant captain, "and we will have to work very hard to get through."
Tony Allin and Richard Stubbs proved they can produce the goods when the pressure is on by fighting back from two down to win their match 3&2 but, elsewhere, it was carnage for a RND line-up missing three first choice players.
Dave Miller and Gary Fisher lost 2 down, Andy Hood and Geoff Sykes 3&2, Paul Ellicott and George Fenton 4&3 and, in the final contest, Mike "Squire" Martin and Kevin Wickham 3&2.
"No complaints," said Hopkins. "The course was in excellent nick and the greens were good, but, as a team, we putted badly and got what we deserved. The Libbaton boys chipped and putted brilliantly. Now we have to do the business next Monday."
