Palairet 2021 - Our best run for many years

RND Palairet Vs Saunton

The team had really high hopes for Palairet Memorial Trophy this year after putting out the current holders Teignmouth in the first round at Tiverton and then beating the strong team of Downes Crediton at Yelverton both matches by the narrow margins of 3.5 - 1.5.

The last time we won the trophy, a handicap foursomes matchplay Inter-Devon club knockout was in 1957. The matches are usually one a month starting in April and finishing in September.

So it was off to East Devon GC for the third round, less than a month after the first round as Devon Golf tried to play catch up with all the delays this year due to Covid.

All clubs have issues with availability but when you win a match and are told the next round is the following Sunday and for many at a golf course that they have never played before it brings added difficulties for everyone. This year the RND team have massively put themselves out to get in practice rounds and make themselves available for selection, it has been a great team spirit with some excellent golf and plenty of team banter!

The 3rd round Vs Saunton at East Devon was incredibly close and as usual with these matches was just down to a couple of putts that fell and a couple that didnt. We lost 3.5 - 1.5 with, unbeaten in 3 matches Chris Hampton and Mark Luscombe easily winning their match 5/4. Chris Brown and Sean Downing recovered from 1 down on the 18th tee to make a half, they are also unbeaten in the 3 matches. Sean deserves a special mention having played incredibly well bearing in mind he suffered a massive stroke just over 12 months ago and is an inspiration to anyone who is recovering from any serious injury or illness.

We all wish Saunton the very best in their remaining matches.

There were lots of Palairet debuts this year, plenty of players finding out about the pressure of the first tee shot. The team events are open to any member who is prepared to be reliable and available for selection. We ran some free team training evenings at the beginning of the season which Mike Wilson generously gave up his time for. If you are interested in playing for the club then turning up to these and showing your enthusiasm is really important.

On a personal note a massive thanks to all the players this year for giving us a great shot at getting to the finals and ...... "There is always next year".

  • Very friendly place which still retains much of its Old world charm whilst moving into the modern times,. especially the standard and quality of the Restaurant and Social side of Golf Club Life. As far as my friends and I are concerned, It is the place to go.
  • Awesome golf course in an unreal setting and very well maintained, highly recommend playing here if you get the chance. Demanding but fair course that makes you think. If you’re getting a caddie ask for Dave, great guy who knows his stuff
