NDL 16+ hcap cup
The 16+ Greensomes Match Play team, did the club proud this Sunday 2nd July against last year’s winners Portmore. With only one of the team having represented the club in the past, not to mention the home side having to give away a total of 8 shots, a tough battle was fought against a strong away team.
The first pair, Ivor Smith and Mark Gough, were relieved to be one up after nine with our opposition having used two of their three shots. The visitors put the pressure on as we lost the 10th and 11th to be one down. We held on tight, and a solid par on the 16th put us back to all square. This was then followed by two more very strong holes by the home side, and the match finished 2 up to RND.
The second pair, Mark Stephen Lee and Jim Teather, were pitched against a very strong side. They both ensured that our guests did not have an easy ride. The RND duo were one down after nine, but a strong start to the back nine put them one up after the 12th. They held their nerve, and although dropping a hole, they approached the 17th all square. Unfortunately our boys , after finding the burn, lost the 17th and subsequently their half on the 18th, meant the visitors finished 1 up.
Our final pair, Andy James and Martin Morgan, similarly had to give away three shots. Again the home side had a strong front nine to be one up on the turn. Another fraught battle ensued, which saw the RND pairing heroically all square after 18 holes. As all matches have to be played to a finish, and with a large crowd forming, Andy and Martin took to the 19th tee. The Portmore pairing pitched their third shot four foot from the flag, as an unlucky bounce put the RND side in the burn. A valiant effort unfortunately was not enough to halve the hole, and the away side finished 1 up.
It was an incredibly exciting match and a very tight one too. With Portmore winning 2-1, we wish them all the best for the next round. On a personal note, I am very grateful to our team and I’m looking forward to playing golf with them all soon.

Parker Trophy: Captain - Chris Brown
Prestigious county Scratch foursomes trophy. Teams of 6.
The Parker trophy side lost a very close game 2-1 in round 1 against local rivals Saunton on Friday 12th May. The match was held at Holsworthy in miserable wet and windy conditions which proved to be a real leveller. A walkover win for Neil James and Ben Keen in match 3 due to the opponents being 45 minutes late meant we only needed 1 point from the other 2 matches. A poor performance with too many fairways missed by captain Chris Brown and partner Sean Downing meant a 4 & 3 defeat and the result now rested on the final game on the course. Ollie Tanton and Steve Flood battled against Sauntons strongest pairing, and after losing 17 to go 1 down, looked like they would keep the match alive when Ollie's long drive and a great long iron by Floody set up an eagle chance on 18 from 35 feet. However Sauntons 3rd shot from 120 yards pitched short of the green, before lipping out and finishing 3 inches from the hole for a tap in birdie. Even Ollies fabled putting couldn't find the cup from 35 feet and the game ended in defeat by 1 hole.
Thanks to all the squad who have been part of the Parker Trophy this season, either in the team or practice sessions. Not our year this year, but we have some juniors with handicaps reducing quickly and there is definitely a strong future ahead of our scratch team.

Palairet: Captain - Richard Hughes.
Prestigious county handicap foursomes trophy. Teams of 10.
The Club Palairet team beat Elfordleigh on Sunday in a very close and tense match to go through to the 3rd round.
The Palairet is the premier Devon matchplay tournament, RND havent won this since 1956, it is a tough competition playing at neutral venues, often giving large amounts of shots against clubs much more used to playing on tree lined courses.
The first group were the only ones to lose, however this was only by 1 hole and they had to give a shot on the 18th so it was very close. Joe Worthington holed a tough 15 footer on 15 to stay in the match and along with Chris Drew they played really well, fighting all the way round.
Neil and Darren James had a tough start quickly going two down but rallied and won several holes on the trot including the 11th where they were giving a shot and the brothers finished on the 15th with a solid 4/3 win.
Paul DeNoronha and Gary Fisher were never behind and won a very creditable 6/5.
This left the third group Chris Hampton and Pat McGuckin being taken to the 18th whilst 1 up and Selwyn Fisher and Mark Lee, both playing their first Palairet match going down 17 1 up.
Mark and Selwyn finished the match on 17 which was a good job because Chris and Pat looked like they would lose the 18th and might have had to play on, my nerves were getting the better of me by then and I was only watching!
So a great performance, everyone dug deep and fought hard and we look forward to a likely 3rd round match against Stover who put us out last year and went onto win the tournament.
Thank you very much to the supporters who came to Okehampton.
North Devon league: Captains - Shaun Loze and Ian Tossell.
Teams of 6 play individual stableford in a league format.
In our third round match at Saunton we were joint winners with Saunton. This leaves us second in the league behind Torrington With the next venue being libbaton on June 18th.
Team were Chris drew, Chris Hampton, Paul Wilson, joe worthington, ollie tanton, Shaun loze
Rosebowl: Captains Shaun Loze and Ian Tossell.
Handicap foursomes trophy, teams of 10.
We unfortunately lost our first round match v ilfracombe at Morthoe 4 -1. This was always going to be a tough venue for us and when the teams were announced it was made harder as we had to give between 3 and 5 shots per match. Lead pair Chris drew and josh salmon did well and gained a creditable half, richard hughes and Ian Tossell lost their match leaving it down to Steve flood and mark lee who lost on 17 and joe worthington and pat Mcguckin losing on 18 which left Shaun loze and Ethan Jeffery gaining a half.
High Handicap Cup: Captain - Mark Gough

Inter Club Friendly Reports
RND Vs The Seniors GS
Compliments about the Club and course were in plentiful supply from the Seniors and it is apparently one of their more popular fixtures which speaks for itself. It does occur to me that we could make something of this as a news story on the website. This match has been held, consecutively, as far as I can establish since 1946 over the 71 years without interruption, despite foot and mouth etc! I guess it is thanks largely to Peter Brown's efforts for the success of the fixture over the years. The Club's team of 24 is probably the largest for any match? This year by the way we won 7.1/2 - 4.1/2. Third year on the trot that we have come out top which means we have got something right!
