MINEHEAD v RND VETERANS

Wednesday 16th April 2025

The fourteen-man team all arrived present and correct for elevenses and a selection of baps and coffee as preparation for the match ahead.

On the first tee the weather was set fair albeit a stiffish breeze from the south west generally helping on the front nine, this assisting Chris Taylor who promptly drove the par four first green. This set the scene for Chris and partner Andrew Sutherland who both shared a barrage of heavy blows on the way to a seven and six victory.

Next pair off were Rob Zukowski and Dominic O’Kelly who after an up and down match took charge at the end for a two and one win.

The third match was a tight affair both teams up at times but with never more than one in it, standing on the eighteenth tee all square the Minehead captain Chris Garwood offered us a half match that we graciously accepted.

Match four saw the first success for the home side. Dale Hurrell and Ragaii Loka losing out to a strong pair four and two.

Minehead followed this with another win in match five when Karl Ginger and Bob McDermott were just edged out on the last hole one down.

So, with the match all square, Rick Jones (who recorded an eagle at the first) and his partner Phil Hall won a fine match four and three and ensured we would not be losing on the day.

Minehead however duly won the last match against Pat McGuchin and Brian Russell five and three, a consolation for Brian was a bottle of plonk for his nearest the pin effort two feet from the pin on the fourteenth.

Overall match result was three and half each, a good away result and a great chance to take the bragging rights after the home match on 30th July.

An excellent dinner of chicken curry with rice, poppadom’s and naan followed by sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. All agreed it was a great day’s golf played in good spirit and friendly rivalry great value at £20. The catering staff were friendly, and the course condition was excellent. After all pleasantries were exchanged, we all headed off for a safe journey home.
