Hi all,
Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to yesterday's Rollup Raffle! A special thanks to Simon and Tom for their incredibly smooth work. Your wonderful generosity helped us raise a fantastic total of £415. We also had an amazing individual donation of £100, along with £70 from a couple of other members. Adding in £40 for "Ben's balls" and the £35 I received from my neighbour for Simon & Simon's putters, our current grand total for the Devon Air Ambulance stands at £660. There are uncollected prizes waiting for Peter Brummitt, Steve Gammon, Jeremy Horn, Clive Howard, Dave Hudson, and Tim Keeher.
On the course this year, we've played six matches and only experienced one loss so far. Captained by myself, and on our home turf to boot! Fortunately, our away win against Bude meant we halved overall, allowing us to maintain bragging rights after last year's decisive victory.
It's great to hear that you're enjoying the match reports. Your feedback is much appreciated, and thank you to all the match captains for taking the time to write them. One of those captains is sadly no longer with us, but these opening lines from Chris Coles sum up his wry humour. "The first home match of the season against Libbaton is an indicator that Spring has started, and so it proved on Monday, with near freezing temperatures and a strong easterly wind."
Looking ahead, we'll be adding a new fixture to next year's calendar: home and away matches against East Devon. Credit goes to Pat McGuckin for initiating this with East Devon, and to Phil Hall and myself for convincing the RND Board that another fixture was a good thing.
The Emerton-Court competition will be starting soon, and we have a strong squad that includes some new faces. Our first-round opponent is East Devon. The away leg is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th at 1 pm, and the home match will be on Wednesday, May 21st at 1 pm. If we advance, all our subsequent home matches are booked for Wednesdays at 1 pm on June 18th, July 9th, and August 27th. Your support is always welcome, and having caddies is a great help.
Our match against the RND Juniors is set for June 8th, starting at 1:16 pm. Bob McDermott will be our match captain and will be posting a sign-up sheet soon. Please put your names down and support this fixture, and perhaps help us achieve a rare victory! The dress code is relaxed for this one, and the match meal will be roast beef followed by cheesecake.
The Club will also be hosting a match against the British Golf Collectors Society on Thursday, May 22nd at 1:30 pm, and I've been asked to assemble a team. We'll be playing 4BBB matchplay using hickory golf clubs, with jacket and tie required for dinner. One of their members is also a member of the Magic Circle and performed some amazing tricks last year. Dinner will be at the usual price, and club hire will be £20. If you're interested in playing, please let me know before I ask the Office to email all Club members.
Enjoy the sunshine - and enjoy your golf!
Regards,
Gary
