RND VETERANS v YELVERTON SENIORS

Monday 2nd June

Sunshine, Scorecards, and a Slice of Humble Pie

The sun graced the Burrows once again, continuing our streak of dry weather for friendly matches. At this rate, we might start charging for sunbathing spots!

Two changes were made to our team from the away match: Peter Brummitt stepped in for Simon Trapnell, and Peter Fisher replaced Rob Zukowski on the day. A big thank you to both for stepping up.

A moment of confusion arose when I distributed the scorecards. Yelverton Captain Tony politely pointed out that I had altered their team's order and pairings. I was mortified and assured him I wouldn't dream of such a thing. Upon checking Tony's email from the previous day, the scorecards matched perfectly. Relief washed over me as Tony admitted, "I must have sent you the wrong team sheet."

Bill Scarborough and I were in a rematch against Captain Tony and his partner, Ian. We started strong with three pars, going one up. However, the next eight holes were painful. Tony (26) and Ian (15) played impressively, being just two over gross, racking up 23 Stableford points, and winning six of the eight holes. We found ourselves five down with seven to play. Bill, with shots on the next two holes, won them both, and we managed to hang on for a 3&2 loss.

As I pondered whether and how to mention our opponents' generous handicaps in my speech diplomatically, the following match results came in: Cliff Brown and Peter Brummitt won an "epic match" (Cliff's words) 6&5. Chris Buxton and Peter Fisher secured a 4&3 victory. Brian Mitchard and Bob McDermot delivered a solid 6&4 win. David Hudson and Bryan Palmer triumphed 4&2. Chris Taylor and Ron Juniper were one down playing the last hole. Their opponents hit good drives, but both found the burn with their second shots. Perhaps the thought of Ron's two shots played on their minds? Ron and Chris secured a half.  Match result 4.5 - 1.5 and the aggregate match score stood at 8.5–3.5 in our favour.

The steak and ale pie was as good as ever and was greatly enjoyed by our visitors. As was the pavlova that followed.

Bill set the initial target for the home team's nearest the pin, only to be surpassed by Cliff in the following group. However, Cliff was edged out by Brian Mitchard, who landed about eight feet from the hole. The away team's winner? Our opponent, Ian. Of course, it was.
