RND Vets Vs Minehead Vets - 30th July
Both teams arrived in good time for bright and breezy conditions that was to prove a constant throughout the day. The Minehead lads took full advantage of the breakfast fare to set them up.
After halving the away leg three and half each we were hoping for home advantage to make the difference, and so it proved, as despite the excellent preparation by the away team, the local knowledge and indeed the splendid form of our side was decisive and we dished out a sound 7 – 0 thrashing. Only one match had the decency to allow their opponents to reach the eighteenth where Steve Pryor held his nerve to hole a winning 10 foot putt. The full details, Pat McGuchin and Dave Avery won 2/1, Dale Hurrell and Ragaii Loka won 2/1, Cliff Brown and Peter Brummitt won 5/4, Rob Zukowski and Dominic O’Kelly won 4/3, Phil Hall and Rick Jones won 4/2, Chris Taylor and Steve Pryor won 1 up, and Karl Ginger and Bob McDermott won 6/5.
The speed of play on the day was very acceptable by all and allowed the dinner to be brought forward by half an hour to 5 o’clock. The usual very large portions of chicken curry with rice and poppadums followed by chocolate brownies and ice cream went down a treat. The after-match speeches gave due tribute to the fine condition of the golf course and the catering service, the excellent level of friendly rivalry, and the spirit shown by all the players. Nearest the pin from Minehead was won by Chris Garwood who chose the white bottle and after a rare tie (not sure how the second group didn’t find a mm somewhere) between Dale Hurrell and Rob Zukowski it was decided that Dale hit it close and Rob did not get it closer so Dale would be the winner, however Dale declared he had “given up drinking”, watch this space, so Rob got the red bottle after all.
