Teignmouth GC Vs RND Vets

Tuesday 23rd September saw the first leg of the final Vets Match of the year played at Teignmouth G.C. The weather was glorious, hardly a cloud in the sky. One could see clearly Portland Bill to the east as well as Dartmoor to the west and Berry Head near Brixham to the south. A far cry from the low cloud, mist and rain which has often marred this match in previous years. The course was in superb condition with the greens running true and the heather was in full flower. The only thing missing was the " Other Claret Jug ", the Trophy played for in this annual match. Captain Chris had only been able to locate the base upon which the "Jug" normally sits much to the amusement of his team. At the eleventh hour Ron had succumbed to a chest infection so Kevin Wickham came to the rescue and a full complement made the trip down to S.Devon.

A hard fought match followed with RND leading 3 matches to 1 early on before Teignmouth recovered to level matters and keep the tie in the balance for the second leg. A fine meal of baked cod with seasonal vegetables followed and was enjoyed in great company with much laughter. Nearest the pin was won by Keith Hutchings in his first outing in a Vets Match. Well done Keith and thanks for replacing Brian R. who was suffering from sciatica. Get well soon Brian and Ron! A mention should be made of Teignmouth Captain Malcolm whose wonderful 8 iron to 6 inches won nearest the pin for them.

The following Wednesday 1st October saw the return leg at RND when despite the M5 being closed due to a lorry fire, Teignmouth all made it in time for their matches. Once again the weather was really nice with plenty of sunshine and a light wind. As before a very close tie ensued with most matches going to the wire. Teignmouth were determined to take the spoils for only the third time and only a 20ft putt by Dave Fishleigh on the 18th green to win the hole and halve his match gave RND the narrowest of wins by 3 and a half to 2 and a half. Everybody enjoyed a meal of Roast Pork with all the trimmings followed by Pavlova and partaken in a spirit of friendship and  cameraderie. The Teignmouth boys were effusive in their praise for the course which was in fine condition. Capt. Tom ( Stirzaker ) won nearest the pin for RND.

Oh and as for the "Jug" you ask. Well Mark Evans had finally located it and Malcolm was able to present it to Chris and for so another year it will reside in it's rightful place, our Trophy Cabinet.

The overall score was 6.5 to 5.5 to RND

Chris Taylor, Match Capt.
