Friday 16th August saw the Vets cross swords with Saunton on the East Course. Having tied the home leg 3 - 3 it looked like a tall order. However an outstanding result of 3.5 - 2.5 saw RND retain the Trophy which they had won in 2023.
On a hot and sultry day the latest round of the North Devon Vets League was played on Saunton East Course.The greens were slick and the rough penal. A strong group from RND were looking forward to locking horns with the other 3 teams and a tough battle was expected. They were not disappointed! It was obvious that keeping the ball on the fairways, or at least out of the thick rough was going to be key, and indeed that is how it turned out. The Ladies Presidents Trophy Team won all their group matches to qualify for the Quarter finals, they beat East Devon and went on to play Okehampton at Torquay. We had to be there by 9.30am which was a real effort for some. It was a lovely morning, not too hot or windy and the course was in excellent condition with exceptionally fast greens. Royal North Devon have won Division 1 after a tight finish with Libbaton Golf Club, its been a very long time since we have won this. On Sunday the 9th July Royal North Devon men’s matchplay squad travelled to St Mellion to play in their 3rd round of the Annodata Matchplay series and take on the challenge of the famously difficult Nicklaus course in the swirling wind. After a great result in the first round of the Palairet Trophy, The RND Mens Palairet team faced the Lion Artisans of Mortehoe and Woolacombe in the second-round match held at Yelverton Golf Club on the 4th June 2023. Royal North Devon v Portmore - 26th June 2022 After all matches made it to at least the 17th hole, the High Handicap Team were beaten 2- 1 by Portmore. With changeable weather, and shots being given by our team, it was a challenging afternoon. However, the fixture was played in great spirits and both teams enjoyed reflecting on the matches over sandwiches afterwards. After losing 3 ½ to 1 ½ away on a dog legged tree lined course at Torquay Golf Club the previous week RNDGC Vets had the unenvious task of having to win outright on the return match at RND on Wednesday 18th May. RND welcomed the golfers from Weston super Mare Golf Club on Sunday for the annual fixture. With 12 golfers from each club and the course and weather as good as it gets, the morning matches began with a greensomes format. RND took the spoils, winning five matches to Weston's one. Royal North Devon sent two teams to Holsworthy for the NDL 3 ball team event. Team A consisting of captain Mark Luscombe, Ethan Jeffery and Kevin Rowe fared okay with 65 points with birdie machine Mark Luscombe scoring most of them. Team B consisting of Neil Armstrong, Shaun Loze and Andrew James fared better with a respectable 73 points and would have pushed the leaders if they played the par 3’s better.
On sunday in perfect golfing conditions the final league fixture was played at RNDGC with neither the league winners nor relegation sorted so all to play for. This year the annual Triangular match against East Devon and Saunton was hosted at Saunton on the East Course. Well done to Saunton golf club who took the win - Good scoring with 85% handicap and an easterly gusting up to 27mph and rough up to your knees! The team had really high hopes for Palairet Memorial Trophy this year after putting out the current holders Teignmouth in the first round at Tiverton and then beating the strong team of Downes Crediton at Yelverton both matches by the narrow margins of 3.5 - 1.5. RND Ladies Still Cup Team got off to a great start in their first match of the season against Saunton Ladies at RND. Five pairings set out in strong winds on Sunday afternoon. This winter will see the return of the RND Winter Foursomes order of merit, where players earn points based on their finishing position in each of 5 events scheduled from November to March (dates below). Steve Morrish won last years series, closely followed by Richard Hughes and Chris Drew in 2nd and 3rd place.
